Reflecting on 2009
5 Jan
Well, another year has come to an end and I am urged like many to put together a post reflecting on the past 12 months, as a lot has gone on personally, professionally, and in the world around me that I feel is worth noting.
- I had a baby! The most incredible experience one can ever be blessed with.

- I became a mother (as would naturally follow, but which holds different value than the pregnancy and birth alone).

- And we became a family :)

- I became the Digital Project manager for my company’s Digital Division, and have really found my groove in my career as the resident geek/guru for all projects “digital”.
- I got hooked on Twitter (via #TweetDeck) and subsequently became obsessed with social media.

But lets look beyond me to see what the year has brought to the rest of us in 2009:
News
- Obama’s first year of Presidency – a rough year to get thrown into..

- Everyone struggles through “The Great Recession” and watch our home values plummet. Car dealerships everyone close down. Unemployment rates skyrocket.
- Wars continue to rage on with minimal press coverage (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan…).
- Tiger Woods fiasco – everyone discovers he isn’t as perfect as they had imagined and throw him on the cross.

- Swine Flu Epidemic breaks out, then they change the name to the H1N1 virus to try to dampen the panic and take the pressure of the pigs. Doesn’t work, Swine Flue was much more catchy.

- Michael Jackson dies and everyone exploits the heck out of the whole ordeal.

Technology
- Challenge of the Year: How to consume as much information as possible without getting overwhelmed (solution: apps, apps, and more apps).

- Device of the Year: IPhone 3GS – ability to take live video and send/receive picture SMS (yes!).

- Mobile marketing beyond just SMS becomes huge (ie apps).
- Google Wave launched and doesn’t quite live up tot he hype just yet, although I believe it still has the potential to be revolutionary.

- Social Media BLOWS UP – parents and grandparents flock to Facebook, making us all think twice before posting status updates and pictures and everyone pretends they know what twitter is
.
Trends from 2009
- Everyone gets obsessed with Vampires (True Blood, Twilight, New Moon, the Vampire Diaries)

- Necessary Wardrobe Attire: Black leggings, tall soft leather boots and short dresses. And Uggs are still totally in (yes!)
What will you remember most about 2009?
