A Great Busy Girl’s Tool for Blogging

4 Mar

Every now and then I scroll through my IPhone apps, deleting the crappy ones and rediscovering old goodies.  Oftentimes I do this while driving to pass time on the 2+ hours I spend commuting daily.  (And no I’ve never been in a car accident from distracted driving.  I’m a mom guys – we can do like  a million things at once).

Today I noticed the Dragon dictation app and started fiddling with it, wondering if I will ever actually use it for anything useful.  And then it dawned on me – what a perfect tool to help me compose my blog posts while driving!

With such long commutes I often seek out ways to those hours I spend sitting in my car more useful.  I multi-task while driving far more than is safe to admit (ok so maybe there is a limit to how much one should multi-task while operating a vehicle..), and this seems like a perfect way to both make good use of that time as well as save me from texting and checking email when my eyes should be on the road.

One thing I often do while driving is I reflect on the day and the articles I have read and start pondering topics, often which result in my formulating blog posts in my head, only to either forget or mostly lose the thought by the time I get a chance to sit down and actually compose it in writing (I have like 10 draft blog posts that I jotted down ideas and key points for and just didn’t have time to finish composing so they are sitting there waiting for later revisiting).

Now I can simply speak my thoughts into my phone while driving – even if I sound like a robot when doing it – and then in one click, e-mail it to myself so that I can simply edit and post when I have the time to do so (Obviously I don’t carpool.  This was awkward enough doing with just myself and my baby in the the car).

I do wonder if the creativity in my writing will be diminished due to my having to speak like a robot to ensure proper dictation by the app.  Or if my writing tone differs when speaking my thoughts versus typing them.  Most likely when I edit them later I will be able to put my usual touch on them and they will be just the same.  I also wonder if perhaps my verbal skills will become more honed as I start to think more like how I write, in a more structured and refined way.

So Dragon Dictation – you are now my favorite app to keep this busy girl blogging!
